Angry Alignment Issue - Worn Tires

I have a 2011 Hyundai Sonata that currently has 28,000 miles on it. At about 16,000 miles, I noticed a warbling sound from my tires and it has been getting louder. I purchased a lifetime wheel alignment package with balancing and rotation from Firestone as soon as I purchased the car exactly 1 year ago this weekend with 14,000 miles on it. I have had this car’s alignment checked 3 times and have had the tires balanced and rotated each time. The tires are severely cupped or chopped on the inside edge.
The technician told me from the first time that I brought it in for alignment that everything is perfect except for the camber, which there is no adjustment for on these vehicles. Each time I brought it in for alignment ,the toe, and caster were perfect and camber remained negative and out of range. It appears Hyundai tried to save a few bucks by not installing a camber adjustment bolt.
Now I'm screwed and have to put a set of new tires on at a cost of about $600.00 that will just do the same thing in another 10,000 miles or so. I opened a case with Hyundai today and I’ll see what action they will take to make this right. Some engineer decided that adjustment for camber was not necessary and I am not about to pay for his mistake! This is a known issue and can be found in numerous posts on the web.

Camber is adjustable on the 2011+ Sonatas. A camber bolt kit simply needs to be installed in the front suspension. The bolt allows the angle of the suspension to be adjusted, which effectively changes the camber of the wheels. The rear camber can be adjusted with no bolt kit.

A reputable alignment specialist shop should easily be able to correct the camber. Hyundai dealers are also familiar with the camber bolt kit and should be able to order and install it. The camber bolt kit was the early fix that dealers were trying during the whole 2011 Sonata left-pull fiasco. While it may not have been the end-all-be-all fix for the left pull problem, it could certainly fix your camber issue.

Cupped tires are most likely caused by worn shocks, not poor camber. My Sonata, with 40 mm offset wheels instead of stock 48 mm, also has camber outside the spec and there';s no cupping. Perhaps you need to talk with your dealer about the tire condition and see if there's a tech service builletin; you may get some help on the new tires and certainly on worn shocks. drive much on rough roads?
There's a reason why manufacturers don't install camber bolts; you'd be stunned by the number of drivers who'd play with them and give manufacturer headaches. Did your alignment shop offer to install camber compensation bolts?

Well, as promised; I would give everybody an update on this issue that I have been battling for months now.

After filing my complaint with BBB Auto-Line, I finally had a three-way arbitration conference call with BBB and Hyundai. Hyundai agreed without reservation to:

1. Figure out what the issue is with the front end and repair my vehicle
2. Reimburse me for the cost of my 4 new tires
3. Replace the two new tires that are now cupped/feathered.
4. Provide a loaner vehicle during the repair time.

Here is the bottom line for everyone to understand if you are having issues that you cannot get resolved.


a. Hyundai finally came through and is standing behind their product.
b. I don't believe that Hyundai was intentionally trying to hide anything, they just rely on their Regional Service Manager's recommendation. In my case the RSM (Richard Holloway) just blew me off and blamed it on my tires that were not covered under the Hyundai warranty.
c. You need to have plenty of documentation
d. The BBB Auto-Line process DOES work. You just have to be persistent.
e. If you know you are right, don't stop pursuing the issue. You will hopefully get someone at the top who understands you are getting the run around and will hopefully take care of the issue.
f. In my case, Hyundai replaced the struts with a newer model they had to get from Korea

Since then, I have rented 3 Hyundai Sonatas while out on business trips. All 3 of these vehicles had the same issue!! They had an average of 25k miles on them and each one of them had cupped/feathered tires that sound sound like "womp, womp, womp" as you were driving down the road. There IS a known problem here with these vehicles!! If you are experiencing this issue, you need to contact Hyundai and get this taken care of. Have them replace your front struts!

I am having a problem with my alignment on 2012 Hyundai Sonata Limeted Turbo
Tires wearing on outside edge.... and after numerous trips to Hyundai dealerships ..they advise that alignment was done ... but Tires have worn on outside edge.. (tires were on front of car) .. Hyundai Dealership advise no Camber Bolt available for this model
and they want to charge me to do another alignment... even though it was never done correctly ... I now have 22,200 miles ... and they also state I need at least 2 new Tires... this is nuts!! Any one else having these Issues too..... other issue is the way the Paint on this car chips like crazy on fron hood, bumper & Grill ....

Alignment is a common issue so that's why whenever you change the engine oil you should check your wheel alignment because it will effect on tires and will damage them so care your vehicle to avoid any major damage.

So you suggest two to four alignments per year? I have NEVER had an alignment done on the NF Sonata because it just doesn't need one. I have had no irregular Tire Wear, no pulling or vibrations, no nothing. I am getting ready to add a new set of tires, and getting an alignment is the last thing I would even consider. While the front end in the NF & YF is totally different, this is not a common complaint with the older Sonata?

** update 8/28/2013 :I spoke to Southern States Hyundai Service Rep...and was advised he had a 2013 Sonata Turbo that also started wearing on the outside edge of the front tires.. he had done everything Hyundai requested to tires.. alignments ect...he was trading in his car ... He advised it was due to it was front wheel drive car and that it is normal for tires to wear like that.. and that it was because hyundai set up the alignment specs to make the car handle better... and tire wear will happen like that ..even if I get alignments done... I had been advised to check alignment every 5k by another Hyundai dealership ... and then they went on to blame bumps in the road ... and that only hyundai dealerships could align it correctly .. Firestones. Goodyears.. and others would not be able to align it correctly... which I know is not true ..since i have never had alignment issues before from other tire service stations doing the alignment... I am currently talking to Hyundai Customer Service .. pending any action ... they are not seeing this as a problem .. I do since Tires wearing out every 23K is not acceptable .. and alignments that cant keep the tires from wearing on the outside edge.... my next step will be BBB regarding this.... Is anyone else having these issues ??.. please contact me or leave a post. Thanks unhappy Hyundai owner ... this is my second Hyundai and no problems with the first one.

that makes no sense. If you setup the car to handle better there should be equal wear on the tire. If its wearing on the outer sidewall it means that in a turn the car is scrubbing or experiencing positive camber.
