2018 Sonata Sport Gas Mileage

Hi all, I recently purchased a 2018 Sonata Sport (2.4L). I've only had it about 3 weeks and noticed I get great gas mileage highway driving (low 30's minimum and up to 34), but city driving an abysmal 17-19 mpg. I do not have a heavy foot on the gas....and I know city driving usually sucks with MPG, but I didn't think it would be that bad......how did Hyundai test their cars and get the "up to 28 city" mpg? There is no way in **** I would get close to that number, or even 22 mpg for that matter.....on a side note, when I went to test drive the car at the dealership, the salesman pulls up in the car which by all looks is a Sport trim (honeycomb grill, Sport dark chrome rocker panels, dual exhaust, etc.) but has the "Limited" badging in the back!! He said he has never seen that before in the 20 years he's been selling cars.....So, I guess I have a "Limited" sport...lol....

With the Sonata new. Its what I think in a learning mode.
And its tight.

I was told that is adjust on how you drive and I think it takes it into memory/

Put some miles on it and the fuel milage will increase.

Idling is one of the worst things you can do to your fuel milage.

On the hiway with a little over 1000 miles
Running 75-80 I'm getting 35 mpg.
I know if I slow down it would do better.
But the speed limit is 75, the traffic runs 80 and 85.

Forget about checking city mileage. It all depends on the town or city and amount of traffic. Changes day to day.

Highway mileage is the only one that stays the same day after day.

My city mileage (both cars) around Lake and Seminole County's is always between 18 and 22. If I start driving around Orlsndo, Orange County, mileage drops to 16 to 18.

Open road, on a trip, it is 32 to 35. Both cars are 2.0T.

just sitting and letting your car run uses gas and takes away from your fuel milage.
If your air filter gets dirty.
The more traffic you are in, the more you sit in traffic, the more you stop and go, and the hotter it is. The more this has a effect on yer fuel milage.

What kind of gas you run.
I like Sunoco, Exxon, Chevron and shell gas. I run 87 octane.

Go ask yer hyundai service mgr about your problem.

You can look at your blue indicator of how hard you are accelating on yer speedometer.
I too have a 2018 Hyundai Sonata SEL.
I have driven in Houston traffic and come back to the country.

And your car is probably not broken in and still in the learning mode.

2015 2.0T Sport Limited. Every few weeks or so, I drive this car to a nearby town. Always light traffic. Very few stops. Normally I had been getting 33 or 34 mpg each way.

Yesterday, did the same trip and only got 28 or 29 mpg each way.

Figured out why. This car has always used Shell 93 octane fuel until a few weeks ago.

Because of the hurricane that had all of us worried in Florida this past summer, I had purchased and stored fuel for my emergency generator. 87 octane E10 and Ethanol Free 87 octane. Did not want that fuel to go to waste, so I have been adding it to my Sonata now that hurricane season is over. I’ve added about 15 gallons so far.

This confirms that my Shell 93 Premium gives me much better mpg than both 87 E10 and/or Ethanol free fuel.
