2011 GLE Aux iphone support

So recently received a 2011 GLE from our daughter and I have noticed that plugging in my iphone through the aux port doesn't work. It will start to charge and then keep going from charging to not charging. The screen on the dash will eventually say reading error.

Are the newer iphone just not compatible with using the cord in the car? I can use Bluetooth but that is spotty as it will start saying connection failed after a while.
