Im not sure if Ive just never noticed it before, or if its just louder now, but at idle I hear a distinct click/ticking noise from the engine. I know this noise is always there, characteristic of the valves/lifters I think, but it just sounds louder now. Not really abnormally loud, just more so than before. Do your V6s have this same sound? I cant hear it from inside the car, only outside. Just want to make sure im not going crazy here! Maybe I just never really noticed it before???

Injector noise

Hi,

I believe the noise you are hearing is the fuel injectors. The Sonata has a GDI engine which injects fuel directly into the cylinder at a high presure, about 2500psi. This does emmit a ticking noise at idle. I had a 2006 V6 Sonata and at idle you could not hear the engine but it only got about 22 mpg in the city but my 2011 Sonata seems to get close to 30mpg. I can put up with a slightly louder idle to get 8 more mpg.

Mine does the same... more so on cold starts. If it gets too loud you might have an issue.

Believe it may be bad timing chain tensioner. Appears to affect vehicles with 3.3 V6 & 3.8 Azera. These are the Technical Service Bullitans (TSB) regarding this issue;
Date Announced: OCTOBER 01 2006
TSB #0620002
NHTSA ID #10021137
Summary: 3.3L & 3.8L TIMING CHAIN TENSIONER - PART UPDATE.

Date Announced: DECEMBER 01 2010
TSB #SB-10-EM-006
NHTSA ID #10038212
Summary: HYUNDAI: A REVISED PROCEDURE FOR REPLACING THE TIMING CHAIN TENSIONERS. *RM

Tensioner is supposed to maintain tensioner position but would slip and allow the tension to decrease when the engine was off. Repositioning the tensioner is done with engine oil, so the cam chain would "slap around" until oil pressure built up again.
Old tensioner is manufactured from plastic and replacement is manufactured from metal.
TSB instructed dealers not to replace the tensioners unless the timing chain rattled for an incredible 90 seconds at start up !!
A whining noise may indicate bad idler pulley.

This is a known issue and many have had dealer replace free of charge, even after over warranty time / mileage.

Here's link to posting of Hyundai-forum member who replaced timing tensioner himself;

Hey there, so I have a 2007 2.4L 4-cylinder Sonata and I'm also experiencing a clicking noise. It's been there for a few months, but recently it's gotten a lot louder, and now I can hear it at idle and during acceleration. I've had no time to find a solution due to my schedule in the military. It would be a great help if I knew what it was coming from. Hopefully it's nothing too bad.

hi did you ever find out what was wrong? Mine just started the same thing (2006). My mechanic listened and looked at it for me. He said its not a rod knocking. thank god. HE said it could run for another 100000miles like that you never know. With 190000 miles its not worth taking the engine out to find out what it is. JUst let it die or sell...

Hi. I have a 2007 Sonata with a 4 cylinder engine. I have worked on cars enough to know what noises mean, but this has me stumped. I have a PS pump that will be going out sometime soon, I get the clicking as i make sharp turns. I know what lifters sound like, as they make a muffled clicking and gradually get louder as there is less and less oil. However, I now have a clicking sound that only happens when i accelerate, and its source is coming from the back side of the block. There is a metallic or aluminum cover that is mounted to the engine between the engine and fire wall. It even has a symbol stamped into it showing that you are to keep your hand away from it. However, this is where the clicking is coming from. What is inside of it? how can i stop the clicking?
