I wanted more up-to-date car reliability information that included actual repair rates. So in late 2005 I started getting people together to make this possible. TrueDelta now updates actual repair frequencies, not just dots, four times a year, to track cars closely as they age.

We've had excellent participation by Sonata owners, with over 800 signed up. The more participate, the more precise the stats will be.

Participants simply report repairs the month after they occur on a one-page survey. When there are no repairs, they simply report an approximate odometer reading four times a year, at the end of each quarter.

To encourage participation, participants receive full access to all results, not just those for the Sonata, for free. We'll also share those for the Sonata here after each update.

I'm a member and was reporting information on my Sonata while I had it, but I'm still reporting information on my Genesis Coupe, and now my Genesis Sedan. So sign up so that you, as well as others, can benefit from the excellent information that is being collected and provided to prospective, as well as current owners! :D

I'm happy with my '06, with 97,000 kms. Just completed my 15th oil change yesterday. Haven't bought a part in a few years, except tires and wiper blades. So far, so good. I do hate that oil filter, though. I did like it at the start, but it really is a pain. A nice spin on would be so much easier, and cleaner...

Oh yeah, front brakes were done a year ago. That's it.

New stuff this time. We've updated our reliability stats for the Sonata to include owner experiences through the end of 2014. Plus we've added reliability trends graphs. These indicate how a model's reliability has changed as it has aged, and how different model years performed when the same age.

Repair frequencies, in terms of repair trips per 100 cars per year:

2014 Sonata: 9, low, small sample size
2013 Sonata: 12, low
2012 Sonata: 21, low
2011 Sonata: 39, moderate
2010 Sonata: 45, moderate, small sample size
2009 Sonata: 36, low
2008 Sonata: 30, low, small sample size
2007 Sonata: 28, low
2006 Sonata: 75, moderate
2005 Sonata: 53, low, very small sample size
2004 Sonata: 63, low, small sample size

We have two additional statistics, "Nada-odds" and "Lemon-odds", to indicate the percentage of cars with no repairs in the past year and those that required 3+ trips to the repair shop:

2013 Sonata: 88, 2
2012 Sonata: 82, < 1
2011 Sonata: 72, 1
2009 Sonata: 71, 3
2006 Sonata: 49, < 1

We'll have further updates in May and in August. Additional participants especially needed for the new 2015.

So, how have these cars been doing lately?

Our reliability stats for the Sonata now include owner experiences through March 31, 2015. (Others are nearly a year behind.)

In terms of repair trips per 100 cars per year ("low" is best):

2015 Sonata: 0, low
2014 Sonata: 11, low
2013 Sonata: 12, low
2012 Sonata: 29, low
2011 Sonata: 35, low
2010 Sonata: 37, low, small sample size
2009 Sonata: 38, low
2008 Sonata: 32, low, small sample size
2007 Sonata: 33, low
2006 Sonata: 76, moderate
2005 Sonata: 56, low, very small sample size
2004 Sonata: 55, low, small sample size

Plus, the percentage of cars with no repairs in the past year and those that required 3+ trips to the repair shop:

2013 Sonata: 91, 2
2012 Sonata: 78, 3
2011 Sonata: 76, 2
2009 Sonata: 70, 3
2006 Sonata: 49, 3

No stat for a model year? Then we very much need more participants for it. Same for those with small sample size notes. Next updates in August and November.

Our reliability stats for the Sonata now cover the year ending June 30, 2015. (Others are over a year behind, and so report how these cars were doing when a year younger.)

Repair trips per 100 cars:

2015 Sonata: 25, low
2014 Sonata: 15, low
2013 Sonata: 25, low
2012 Sonata: 23, low
2011 Sonata: 41, moderate
2010 Sonata: 42, low, small sample size
2009 Sonata: 35, low
2008 Sonata: 47, low, small sample size
2007 Sonata: 48, low
2006 Sonata: 91, moderate
2005 Sonata: 42, low, very small sample size
2004 Sonata: 36, low, small sample size

We have two additional statistics, "Nada-odds" and "Lemon-odds", to indicate the percentage of cars with no repairs in the past year and those that required 3+ trips to the repair shop:

2013 Sonata: 84, 4
2012 Sonata: 85, 4
2011 Sonata: 74, 3
2009 Sonata: 74, < 1
2006 Sonata: 34, 3

If a model year isn't listed, or its sample size is small, then we especially need more owners involved.

There is a major problem with the Hyundai Sonata called premature engine failure. It affects model years 2011-2015. Enough complaints have already come in that a recall has taken place for 2011 and 2012 models. For later models, Hyundai is denying warranty coverage on the basis of poor owner maintenance. I am talking about a Sonata's engine seizing at 24,000 miles and the 100,000 mile "Best Warranty in the U.S.A." is not honored. Hyundai places the blame squarely on the customer. That's right, the same person it sweet talked in the showroom the year before. Even when full maintenance records are brought in, it's still somehow the customer's fault. Quite simply, if one NEVER changed the oil, a new car should not die at 24,000 miles. What's more, the engine seizure often occurs on the freeway and is a major potential safety issue as it happens suddenly. Meanwhile, they just keep advertising "Best Warranty in the U.S.A.". I would NEVER buy a Hyundai based on the corporation's callous and total disregard for its customers asking for warranty coverage and being rejected out of hand.
